Newport Police Department

In Newport, Kentucky, the police department is organized into a Chief's Office and four divisions. Patrol, the largest, keeps uniformed officers answering calls for service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Criminal Investigations Division handles follow-up investigations of felony offenses along with a range of preliminary investigations, the Community Services Division takes on quality-of-life problems, and the Administration Division provides the support services that keep the agency running. Several specialized units back those divisions. A bicycle patrol team is part of the department's community policing, crime prevention and interdiction strategy; the canine unit conducts building searches, crowd control and tracking, finds suspects and evidence and detects illegal drugs; and a chaplains program puts selected local clergy on call to counsel officers and residents in emergencies. Newport officers have full power of arrest in the Commonwealth, and the department's goals include partnering with residents, businesses and schools against gangs and graffiti. Its traffic section handles parking citations: most fines are $25, fire lane, hydrant and handicapped-space violations are $30, and a ticket must be paid or contested in writing within seven days before a $10 increase.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Newport city, KY has an estimated population of 14,039.
