Madison County Sheriff's Office

In Wampsville, the Madison County Sheriff's Office polices this central New York county with road patrol deputies, corrections officers who staff the county jail, a civil division, a pistol permit division and a Children's Advocacy Center. Its published pledge promises police and jail services that fight crime with education, deterrence, persistence and steady pursuit of offenders. In January 2025 the office adopted the Blue Envelope program, which gives drivers with autism an envelope for their license, registration and insurance card so a traffic stop goes more smoothly, and it works with groups such as ARISE, Arc Madison Cortland and Madison-Oneida BOCES to hand the envelopes out. Deputies have also joined agencies around the county in a Threat Assessment and Management Team that identifies, assesses and works to defuse potential threats of violence at any hour. A Community Services Office in the county Safety Building runs Operation Safe Child ID, acts as the local contact for the VINE victim notification system, gives child-safe gun locks to handgun owners and coordinates a youth recognition award program. Residents can use the office's mobile app to submit tips, look up inmates and active warrants, and get road closure notices.
