Brunswick's police force dates to 1960, when the city incorporated and its Division of Police replaced the township constables who had served since 1937; since 1992 the division has worked from a station and jail connected to City Hall. Its bicycle patrol began in 1981, and bike officers complete a 40-hour course and certification through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. A Traffic Unit created in 1996 assigns officers to school zones and the morning commute, the evening rush and late-night OVI enforcement on roads that include Interstate 71 and U.S. Route 42. Two K-9 teams hold state certification for both patrol and drug detection. For critical incidents the city relies on the Southwest Enforcement Bureau, a SWAT partnership with departments in southwest Cuyahoga County that brings together hostage negotiators, a sniper-scout group and bomb technicians, and Brunswick also provides a tactical officer to the Medina County Sheriff's Office team. The division is a member agency of the county drug task force, refers families from domestic calls to the Family Assistance Coalition Team, and has worked with the county mental health system since 1988.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Brunswick city, OH has an estimated population of 35,284.
