Calhoun County Sheriff's Office

Founded in 1832, when the county still carried the name Benton, the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office in Alabama enforces state law and keeps the peace countywide, and over the years it has worked from several courthouses and jails, including the Anniston courthouse that has been in use since the county seat moved there in 1899. Its administrative division greets visitors at the front desk, helps with records requests, runs background checks and processes pistol permit applications under the sheriff's direction. Staff there also log and route official reports, take in civil papers and warrants for arrest, and coordinate court matters with judges and the circuit clerk's staff. Behind the scenes, the division handles budgeting, purchasing, information technology, vehicle upkeep and building care. The law enforcement division is organized into seven bureaus covering patrol, communications, detectives, school resource officers, courts, offender management and a reserve and volunteer group. A corrections division operates the Calhoun County Jail, keeping legal custody of everyone booked there, sentenced or not, and tracking each person's records and location. The office also collects historical artifacts tied to its past and invites residents to share them.
