Annapolis Police Department

Law enforcement in Annapolis, Maryland dates to the city charter of 1708, which let the mayor appoint constables, and in 1714 the city began electing its own sheriff in place of Anne Arundel County's. As late as 1854 just two night watchmen patrolled the streets, keeping a fire watch as well as the peace, and the title police officer first appears in city records in 1861. The modern department serves Maryland's capital, about 40,600 people by the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, with a mission of preventing and reducing crime while protecting constitutional rights. Its Community Services Unit runs or joins a range of programs: CCTV cameras placed where analysis shows a need, three speed cameras that rotate among school zones, residential and commercial security surveys, citizen fingerprinting by appointment and Ride-along Thursdays for city residents. A Latino Liaison Office works to build trust and communication with the Latino community. Tips can go anonymously through Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland, which forwards only the tip and pays up to $2,000 when one leads to a felony arrest or indictment.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Annapolis city, MD has an estimated population of 40,744.
