Arkansas State Police is the statewide law enforcement agency for Arkansas and sits within the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, with headquarters in Little Rock. It came into being on March 19, 1935, when Governor J.M. Futrell signed Act 120; the first officers given statewide authority were known as Rangers, a title that later gave way to Trooper. Arkansans recognize troopers by the wide-brimmed campaign hat and by white patrol cars carrying a blue stripe. The Highway Patrol Division is the agency's most visible arm and is divided into twelve troops lettered A through L, each led by a captain and responsible for a set group of counties. Troop commanders also set the local schedule for driver's license testing. During 2023 alone, troopers logged nearly 15 million miles, investigated more than 16,975 crashes, made over 144,900 arrests and stopped to help 31,310 motorists.
