On Cape Cod, the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office centers its work on the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and on what happens to people after they leave it. A five-year, $3.75 million SAMHSA grant pays for medication-assisted treatment and recovery coaching for people with opioid use disorder during and after incarceration, and a culinary skills program in the jail kitchen bakes bread for Cape Cod food pantries through the Answering the Knead project. The Bridge Center, opened in 2025 at the Barnstable Village court complex under the office's Public Safety 2.0 initiative, brings re-entry services under one roof, including a weekly Duffy Health Center community health worker. A Victim Services Unit works with the state Department of Criminal Justice Information Services to certify victims for custody notifications and offers safety planning and crisis referrals, and the facility enforces a zero-tolerance policy under the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act. Civil process deputies hold countywide authority and serve summonses, complaints and other court process for attorneys and self-represented plaintiffs, carrying out the duty in Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 37, Section 11 to serve all precepts lawfully issued to them.
