Founded in 1982, the Burbank Police Department in Burbank, Illinois has grown into a 53-member sworn force supported by clerical staff and code enforcement officers. Its patrol division, which it calls the backbone of the department, answers more than 19,000 calls for service a year, from violent crimes to house watches, working two 12-hour watches around the clock and using crash data and resident feedback to aim traffic enforcement at high-risk areas, school zones and parks. Officers can be selected for school resource, evidence technician, field training and K-9 assignments or as task force officers with the DEA and NARCINT. Two school resource officers work at Reavis High School, Liberty Junior High and District 111, a D.A.R.E. officer teaches in the grammar schools, and several officers speak Polish, Spanish or Arabic. The detective unit, with four detectives and a commander, handles theft, auto theft, robbery, identity theft, burglary and computer fraud and also sends detectives to the South Suburban major crimes task force. The department's K-9 is trained in obedience, agility, evidence and building searches, drug detection, tracking and apprehension. A three-member civilian Fire and Police Commission appointed by the mayor handles hiring, promotions and serious discipline.
