Butte - Silver Bow County Sheriff's Office

Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement serves the consolidated city-county government in Montana and is led by the sheriff. Its Operations division keeps patrol on duty around the clock in 12-hour day and graveyard shifts supervised by lieutenants and sergeants, and it includes traffic officers, K-9 teams, a housing authority officer and school resource officers whose positions are funded jointly with Butte School District #1. The Investigations division handles crimes against persons and children, property crimes and drug cases, keeps detectives on call at all hours and takes part in the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force alongside its own cases. The detention center, built in 2004, books all adults arrested in the county and assigns inmates to minimum through maximum security housing based on a risk classification. Civil process fees must be paid in advance, with $65 charged to serve a summons or subpoena and $100 for writs. The agency also keeps information on registered sexual and violent offenders, and a sentencing court can give a sexual offender a risk level of 1, 2 or 3 under Montana Code Annotated 46-23-509.
