Chatham County Police Department

Unincorporated Chatham County, Georgia, has relied on its own police force again since February 1, 2018, when the Chatham County Police Department, headquartered in Savannah, took back patrol duties there. For about twelve years before that, county and city officers worked side by side in the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, a merger completed in 2005 that ended after the Savannah City Council voted in 2017 to end the contract. The department's roots reach back to 1912, when six men were sworn in as the first county officers and the county bought six motorcycles for them. Officers now work out of three precincts, Whitefield, Islands and West Chatham, with headquarters housed at West Chatham. Patrol is backed by K-9 and traffic units, a Strategic Enforcement Team, neighborhood liaison officers, a behavioral health and homelessness team and a Marine Patrol unit. Detectives, forensic technicians and crime analysts carry cases forward, and CCPD shares a multi-jurisdictional SWAT team with Pooler, Bloomingdale, Garden City, Tybee Island and Port Wentworth. The agency tracks its goals in a 2026 Strategic Plan Performance Report and posts monthly counts of school zone speed camera violations issued in unincorporated areas.
