The California Highway Patrol — Truckee Area is the CHP office for the Truckee-Tahoe region and falls under the department's Valley Division. Its service area reaches into Nevada, Placer and Sierra counties. Because Interstate 80 enters California from Nevada here, the office sits at one of the state's entry points. Officers cover I-80 along with State Routes 28, 89 and 267, plus hundreds of miles of county-maintained roads outside city limits. Severe mountain weather on I-80 is a recurring challenge, and the Area coordinates with Caltrans to keep commercial trucks moving over that terrain. Calls are answered around the clock, every day of the year, from a station completed in 2019 just north of the interstate. Child safety seat checks and VIN inspections are handled by appointment, and the office also runs driver safety classes and volunteer opportunities.
