The Churchill County Detention Center, housed inside the Nevada county's sheriff's office building and opened in December 2017, replaced an older, overcrowded jail. It is rated for 120 beds, although its operating capacity runs between 65 and 80 depending on how inmates are classified, and most of the people held there are pretrial detainees waiting to post bail or go to trial; juveniles are accepted only when a court has adjudicated them as adults. The office is organized into two divisions. Operations covers patrol and an investigations section trained to investigate and document major crimes, while the Support Division runs communications, detention, court security and civil process, serving subpoenas, evictions and garnishments and issuing liquor and concealed weapons permits. Reserve deputies make a significant contribution, mainly by transporting prisoners and serving civil papers. A free mobile app gives residents jail and inmate information, a way to send tips, NDOT road conditions, weather and links to domestic violence and elder protective services, and the office points students, parents and school staff to Nevada's anonymous SafeVoice reporting system for threats.
