Just 14 deputies and four sergeants make up the patrol division of the Crook County Sheriff's Office, and together they provide round-the-clock first response to crimes across nearly 3,000 square miles of central Oregon (2025 Census Gazetteer), handling more than 13,000 incidents a year. Partners include the Prineville Police Department, Oregon State Police, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Under an annual contract with the Bureau of Reclamation that dates to 1986, the office is the lead law enforcement agency at Prineville Reservoir, where an assigned deputy patrols the shoreline, the Crooked River, Roberts Bay and the North Shore road. The office as a whole counts more than 55 full-time law enforcement and support personnel. Its corrections division runs the 86-bed Crook County Jail with 26 corrections staff, mostly holding pre-sentence detainees and people serving local sentences or parole and probation sanctions, and partners with outside agencies on recovery services meant to reduce reoffending. The civil division serves court orders, foreclosures and criminal subpoenas for the district attorney, the office offers LiveScan electronic fingerprinting by appointment, and an annual Citizens' Academy invites residents behind the scenes.
