West of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma's El Reno Police Department keeps officers on the street at all hours in 12-hour shifts that rotate a week on and a week off, with a lieutenant over each shift. Patrol officers open the investigation for the bulk of reported crimes and file offense reports, and many cases close at that stage. When leads run thin or a case calls for specialized work, the Criminal Investigation Division takes over follow-up on drug cases, auto and home burglaries, check forgery, credit card fraud, identity theft, homicides and suspicious deaths. Traffic Services aims to cut the rate and severity of collisions through DUI enforcement, speed reduction, commercial vehicle and equipment checks, pedestrian safety, driver education and public talks, and it answers resident traffic complaints. The department also runs the city animal shelter, where residents arrange adoptions and owners reclaim impounded pets under fees set by chapter 135 of the El Reno Code of Ordinances. Its Records Division handles requests under the Oklahoma Open Records Act, 51 O.S. § 24A.1 et seq., along with special use vehicle registrations, and crash reports can be pulled online. The department's motto is "Serving With Pride."
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), El Reno city, OK has an estimated population of 17,919.
