The Hawaiʻi Police Department polices Hawaiʻi Island, and its mission ties enforcing the law and keeping the peace to preserving the spirit of aloha. Community Policing Officers are assigned to every district on the island, building partnerships with residents through Neighborhood Watch, Citizen Patrol and problem-solving work. Through Versaterm CommunityConnect, people who call for certain services can receive text or email updates on officer delays, case status and arrests in English, Spanish or Tagalog, and victims can follow their cases in an online portal. The Community Relations Section books speakers on personal safety, robbery readiness, senior safety, theft and scams, and workplace violence. District stations accept unused or expired prescription drugs year-round through a Department of Health drop box program, and the C-TAP partnership pairs residents holding warning signs with a speed board and later enforcement. Under Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes Chapter 134, island residents register firearms and apply for permits to acquire them at their district police station. Report requests follow state law, with criminal reports redacted under Chapter 92F and crash reports released to parties of interest defined in section 291C-20.
