Department headquarters in McDonough doubles as the South Precinct for the Henry County Police Department, which serves Henry County in the southeastern part of metro Atlanta. Because Interstates 75 and 675 cross the county, patrol is split between that precinct and a North Precinct near Stockbridge, plus a mini-precinct in Fairview. Captains command each precinct, lieutenants run every shift as watch commanders, and the territory is divided into 20 patrol zones to shorten response times. Uniform Patrol makes up about two thirds of the agency's personnel and is backed by Special Operations, which includes the A.C.E. community engagement unit, F.I.T. and H.E.A.T. units, motor officers, a collision team for fatal and serious-injury crashes, and nationally certified K-9 teams that search for narcotics, explosives and fleeing suspects. Its seven divisions also take in community operations, special services, support services, criminal investigations and school resource officers working in Henry County Schools. The department also operates a Georgia POST-approved Regional Training Academy and hosts a 10-week Citizens Police Academy for county residents.
