Hinckley Township's police department in Medina County, Ohio, became a full-time agency on June 1, 1978, with the hiring of a full-time chief to organize it; a levy passed that November paid for more full-time staff. Officers now provide service 24 hours a day; dispatch is the one service that comes from outside, supplied by the Medina County Sheriff's Office. Officers carry criminal cases from the first report through follow-up investigation, charging and courtroom testimony. They investigate every traffic crash regardless of severity, reconstruct major crashes, and run a small traffic unit that watches areas where residents ask for more enforcement. The department belongs to the Cuyahoga Regional Information Sharing group, which is linked to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System for driving, vehicle registration and wanted-person records. Residents can pick up free gun locks at the station on weekdays, request vacation house checks, and organize Neighborhood Watch groups using National Crime Prevention Council materials. Door-to-door vendors must register with the department, pass a background check and wear a township-issued ID badge while their 90-day permit is in effect.
