Keizer, Oregon incorporated in November 1982 and initially contracted with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for police services before forming its own department on May 19, 1984, with a chief, two sergeants and eight patrol officers. Today the Keizer Police Department has 42 sworn officers, eight support staff, reserves, cadets and other volunteers, and it describes its approach as problem-oriented policing: the patrol lieutenant has the time and authority to direct responses to recurring problems, working with the detective lieutenant and a crime analyst who tracks trends. Inside the patrol division, a Community Response Unit targets both criminal activity and non-criminal livability issues. Two K9 teams work night shifts, recertify every year with the Oregon Police Canine Association and assist neighbors such as Salem police and the Marion County Sheriff under inter-agency agreements. Residents and businesses can voluntarily register home and business surveillance cameras so detectives know where to look for footage. Each summer, students entering fourth through sixth grade attend BLAST Camp with the department and the Keizer Fire and Marion County fire districts, and adults can enroll in a Citizens Academy.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Keizer city, OR has an estimated population of 39,013.
