Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office

Kosciusko County's Sheriff's Office in Indiana traces its history to April 4, 1836, when voters chose the county's original sheriff, whose office and jail were a log cabin close to where the old courthouse stands. A jail built in 1871 at Indiana and Main streets served until the 1980s and is now a museum for the county historical society. In 1982 the county opened a joint courts, sheriff and jail building, and after years of crowding that structure was rebuilt into a larger jail with a new sheriff's office in 2003. Today the office is organized into corrections, investigations, patrol, a reserve division, communications and a lake patrol that looks after the county's many lakes along with its roads, waterways and parks. Narcotics tips go to NET 43, and an automated line gives out inmate information. Residents can turn to the office for civil process, crash and incident reports, gun permits, criminal history checks, sex offender registration, tax warrants and sheriff's sales, with posted fees such as $12 for an accident or incident report and $30 for an initial fingerprint card. The office also posts applications for Camp H.E.R.O. on its website.
