Lynchburg Sheriff's Office

Lynchburg Sheriff's Office concentrates on the courts and the criminal justice system in the city of Lynchburg, Virginia, handling court services, the transport of inmates and law enforcement duties. Everyone entering the courthouse is screened with walk-through and handheld metal detectors, and deputies are posted in each courtroom while court is in session. Deputies serve summonses, subpoenas and other papers from the city's courts, execute writs of possession covering real, personal or mixed property, and stand by at evictions to keep the peace rather than to move tenants out. The office brings defendants and witnesses held in correctional facilities outside the city to court and issues jury summonses for the Circuit Court from the list the clerk provides. Although city police hold primary responsibility for temporary detention orders, deputies often transport those patients to facilities outside Lynchburg so officers can stay on patrol, and the office assists police and other agencies and offers funeral escorts on request. Community programs include Project Lifesaver for people with Alzheimer's, autism and related conditions who become lost, the GTO CADETS volunteer program for people with developmental disabilities, and Kinder Kop, which sends a deputy to read and share lunch with elementary students.
