Ogunquit's police department in Maine bases its community-based policing on four stated values, compassion, integrity, fairness and respect, in its dealings with townspeople, shop owners and visitors alike. Full-time and part-time staff run several programs for people who live alone or leave property empty. Under the Good Morning program, senior citizens and adults with disabilities who live by themselves complete a short application and waiver, then call the department each morning between 8 and 10 a.m.; if no call comes in by 10, a representative phones the participant and, failing that, sends a patrol unit to check on their welfare. Residents leaving for vacation or closing a seasonal home can enroll in the Vacant House Check Program so an officer checks the property during the dates they are away, and owners or managers of a closed business can use a similar Business Check Program. In winter, residents who cannot pick up the town's free salt and sand can ask an officer to deliver a five-gallon bucket to their home, as availability allows. Community Service Officers manage the town's paid parking program and support the department.
