K9 Geo, a food-motivated Labrador who joined the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin in July 2024 through the sponsorship of the nonprofit OUR Rescue, is certified in electronic storage detection, so he can find hidden phones, thumb drives and other devices in cases involving internet crimes against children, missing persons, stalking and human trafficking, and he also comforts victims and witnesses. He works alongside patrol dogs trained at Steinig Tal Kennels in Campbellsport, who still take their commands in German. The office's jail administers Huber release; under Wis. Stat. §303.08, a person sentenced to county jail may be granted the privilege of leaving during necessary and reasonable hours for purposes such as working, seeking employment and attending to family needs, and Ozaukee's jail adds booking and random drug and alcohol testing for participants. Through Project Lifesaver, people prone to wandering because of Alzheimer's, dementia, autism or Down syndrome can wear a small transmitter that deputies can track even where GPS fails. Each fall an eight-week Citizens' Academy, including a Saturday range session, takes residents behind the scenes of patrol, traffic enforcement and other services, and young people ages 14 to 20 can join the Public Safety Cadet program.
