Sheriff and coroner are a single office in Plumas County, California, so the deputies based in Quincy both enforce the law and establish the cause, manner and mechanism of death in coroner's cases. The office's jurisdiction covers the entire county, including the City of Portola and state and federal land across the northern Sierra and Feather River country, and it coordinates law enforcement mutual aid and search and rescue throughout that terrain. Deputies serve civil process and staff the Plumas County Correctional Facility, which also offers an alternative custody program. Residents can register for Genasys Emergency Management alerts, which the county uses to send geographically targeted calls during wildfires, evacuations, chemical spills, lost-person searches and other emergencies. Through the Helping Hands holiday program, which the Plumas County Sheriff's Employees Association has led with community partners for more than four decades, families receive food and heating fuel in winter, coats, toys and gifts, children get help joining sports and activities, and a graduating senior from each major community earns a scholarship. The office also issues concealed weapons permits and alcohol and event permits, and points crime victims to the state Victim Compensation Program.
