Prairie Village Police Department

Prairie Village and neighboring Mission Hills, two Kansas cities, share one police force. The Prairie Village Police Department provides 24-hour law enforcement for both with 47 sworn officers and 13 civilian employees, who work under the motto "A Tradition of Service." In the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates, Prairie Village had 23,008 residents and Mission Hills 3,522. The department is organized into three divisions. Patrol includes animal control and the K-9 and traffic units; Staff Services covers dispatch, records, property, crime analysis and professional standards; and Investigations brings together detectives, a Special Investigations Unit, crime prevention, D.A.R.E. and school resource officers at Shawnee Mission East High School and Indian Hills Middle School. Investigators look into both felony and misdemeanor crimes in the two cities. Residents heading out of town can sign up for the free House Watch program, which sends patrol officers to make random checks on the empty house. Fingerprinting, off-duty officers for event security or traffic control, and a Citizens Police Academy are also offered. State-reportable crash reports are free through the Crash Docs website, usually five to seven days after a crash; other reports come from the Records Department.
