The Shelbyville Police Department in Indiana holds two accreditations at once: a national one through CALEA and a state one through ILEAC. Certified officers work in patrol, investigations and administration, backed by a reserve force, civilian evidence and office staff, and an accreditation manager who keeps the agency in line with both sets of standards. The department shares the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center with the county sheriff's department, which helps the two agencies work together. Its Criminal Investigations Division has three units: general investigations, which takes crimes against persons, property crimes and financial crimes; narcotics investigations; and cold case investigations. Investigators train in evidence collection, interviews, forensic pathology, homicide, sexual assault and crimes against children, and they use current tools for latent fingerprints and DNA alongside a crime scene technician and the property room. Local schools get D.A.R.E. lessons from a department officer. Through the AWARE program, families with a physician referral can get emblems for vehicles and homes that alert responders to a person with a cognitive disability, and residents can send anonymous tips about drivers who pass stopped school buses.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Shelbyville city, IN has an estimated population of 19,866.
