Truro Police Department

Every morning, seniors enrolled in the Truro Police Department's Reassurance Program in Massachusetts call the station before 10 a.m. to say they are all right; if no call comes, a dispatcher phones the home, and an officer is sent if there is still no answer. The program serves seniors who live alone or with an ailing spouse or relative. Residents can also apply to ride along with patrol officers as observers. For people buying and selling through online marketplaces, the station lobby and the south parking lot of the Truro Public Safety Facility serve as an Online Safe Exchange Zone; the lot is lit and under video surveillance, though staff do not witness deals or settle disputes. A five-week Citizen's Police Academy meets on Wednesday evenings and covers station tours, ride-alongs, criminal investigations, the courts, Massachusetts police reform, dispatch, mental health response and crash investigations, and it is open to residents, town employees, board members and local business owners aged 18 or older. Patrol officers remind drivers that the state's move-over law, M.G.L. c. 89, section 7C, requires changing lanes or slowing down near stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles with flashing lights, with fines of up to $100.
