University of Kansas Police Department

The University of Kansas Police Department protects the KU campus in Lawrence, Kansas. Its staff combines commissioned police officers with non-commissioned professionals, and the agency describes its approach as community policing grounded in engagement, problem solving, transparency and accountability. The patrol unit carries most of the workload, keeping order on university property, enforcing federal law, Kansas statutes and university regulations, investigating crimes on campus, apprehending offenders and recovering stolen property. KU police dispatchers can push alerts and instructions through the fire alarm systems in roughly two-thirds of campus buildings, including every classroom building and large gathering venue. The department also runs the central lost-and-found for the entire campus.
