The Town of Wells, Maine, about 58 square miles of land by the 2025 Census Gazetteer, relies first on its own police department for law enforcement, with officers on duty at every hour. The department reports answering more than 30,000 calls for service a year, making thousands of traffic stops and making over 200 criminal arrests annually, from simple assault to armed robbery. Its structure has three parts: patrol, which also covers animal control and the department's K-9 teams, plus criminal investigation and communications divisions. Each K-9 team trains at the NH Police K-9 Academy for certification by the United States Police Canine Association and can search buildings and open ground, track a scent, find discarded evidence or narcotics and help catch fleeing suspects. Enhanced 9-1-1 calls land at the York Public Safety Answering Point, which relays them along with caller details to Wells dispatchers, who staff the center 24 hours a day. Those dispatchers hold Maine Criminal Justice Academy terminal-operator certification plus emergency telecommunications, medical and fire dispatch training, enough to coach a caller through CPR or childbirth. Wells town counted 12,094 residents in 2025 under the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimate.
