White County sits in the Northeast Georgia Mountains, a draw for tourists from metro Atlanta, and its sheriff's office in Cleveland is organized around uniform patrol, criminal investigations, civil and warrants work, and the county jail. The Uniform Patrol Division keeps 24 POST-certified deputies on a round-the-clock schedule to answer emergency calls, enforce traffic and criminal law and prevent crime, and the office's K9s, Castrol and Jelly, received grant-funded ballistic vests. Investigators take every crime reported in the county through follow-up, crime scene work, interviews and courtroom testimony. The Civil and Warrant Division serves court papers and arrest warrants regardless of where they were issued and transports inmates to court and medical appointments. The 176-bed White County Jail books roughly 1,800 people a year and offers Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, education and religious services. The Records Department handles open records, expungements and criminal history requests, and the office hosts a free one-day handgun safety course, with classroom and range instruction, for residents 21 and older who pass a Georgia Crime Information Center background check.
