Greenbelt's police department in Maryland earned full, unconditional accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies in November 2006, after an on-site assessment that August found it met all 446 standards then in force, and CALEA most recently reaccredited it, with Advanced Reaccreditation Excellence, in November 2023. The city, in northern Prince George's County, had roughly 25,000 residents in 2025, per the Census Bureau, and the department reports 53 sworn officers and 15 support staff. Beyond regular patrol it deploys bicycle patrols and school resource officers, uses public-private partnerships that let businesses share the cost of officers, and has a crime prevention officer who works with businesses and homeowner associations. On February 23, 2022, it formed a Community Action Team, now a supervisor and three officers including the school resource officer and the Franklin Park liaison officer, to focus on proactive community policing, school and business relationships and special event requests. A free 11-week Greenbelt Community Police Academy meets Thursday evenings for people who live, work or attend school in the city, and city animal services officers work weekdays on pet ownership and wildlife education.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 2023), Greenbelt city, MD has an estimated population of 24,572.
