Montgomery County Police Department

Beside the nation's capital, Montgomery County, Maryland, takes in about 507 square miles of land and water by the 2025 Census Gazetteer, and the county police department fields about 1,300 sworn officers plus some 650 support employees, according to the department's own figures. The Census Bureau put the county's 2025 population at 1,074,582 in its Vintage 2025 county estimates. Most uniformed officers on patrol fall under the Patrol Services Bureau, which splits the county into six police districts. Serious and violent crime goes to the Investigative Services Bureau, whose divisions include criminal investigations and forensic science and evidence management. The Special Operations Bureau supplies tactical and support work through units such as a K9 Unit, a Managed Search Operations Team, a Special Events Response Team, an Emergency Services Unit, a Real-Time Intelligence Center and an unmanned aircraft program, while its Security Services Division protects county employees, visitors and facilities. Around the clock, the Communications Division answers every 911 call placed in the county as well as non-emergency police calls. The department posts its policies for public viewing, invites comment on those under revision and withholds those that could jeopardize operations or safety, as Maryland Public Safety Article § 3-515 permits.
